A major
REHABILITATION RESEARCH CENTRE
including a Workshop for Cancer Patients, was established in
1962 in the Sewree-Wadala area of Bombay, close to the Tata
Memorial Hospital (another similar unit is also being setup
in Delhi and we are planning to have identical Units in
Calcutta and Madras in the near future).

A CHEMOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT was organized
by us at the Tata Memorial Hospital in 1954. The first such
unit to be established in India. Chemotherapy is one of the
three basic methods of treating cancer.

The first CYTOLOGY LABORATORY in our
country was also organized by us at the Tata Memorial
Hospital, in 1956. Cytology is an important diagnostic tool
for early detection of Cancer. The CHEMOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT
and CYTOLOGY LABORATORY have since been absorbed by the TATA
Hospital, as essential basic departments.

Numerous
CANCER DETECTION CENTERS
including a Mobile Detection Unit have been established by
us in Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta and other parts of our country
since 1960, which also serve as advisory units for Cancer
Prevention.

Five POPULATION-BASE CANCER REGISTRIES
were established by us to cover the whole of Maharashtra
state, in 1963, at Bombay, Poona, Aurangabad and Nagpur and
in 1984 at Sholapur. They have proved of great help to our
Government and the World Health Organization, to assess the
incidence and mortality of cancer in India.

A PROFESSIONAL CANCER JOURNAL, the only
one of its kind in the country is being published by us
since 1963. We have also published a Hand Book for doctors,
on the Diagnosis and Management of Cancer, through Longmans,
the International publishers.

The ASIAN FEDERATION OF CANCER was
established in 1971 with our Society as one of the founder
members.

The INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF ONCOLOGISTS
(the first professional Society of Indian Cancer
specialists) was established in 1977.

We are members of the WORLD HEALTH
ORGANIZATIONS INTERNATIONAL EXPERT COMMITTEE on Cancer, and
represent India in the GENERAL ASSEMBLY of the INTERNATIONAL
CANCER UNION (Both based in Geneva).

We have sponsored three PATIENT-ORIENTED
NATIONAL ORGANIzATIONS in our country - THE OSTOMY
ASSOCIATION OF INDIA, THE INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF
LARYNGECTOMEES and THE REACH FOR RECOVERY PROGRAMME (for
women who have undergone breast surgery for cancer).

Food and monetary aid are offered to poor
cancer patients daily (worth nearly Rs. 6 lakhs per year)

LADY RATAN TATA MEDICAL
AND RESEARCH CENTRE the Clinical Research Wing of our
Society – has a full complement of THE LATEST DIAGNOSTIC AND
TREATMENT FACILITIES (the first of its kind in our country).

An Innovative
CANCER RISK INSURANCE
SCHEME was introduced in July 1985, whereby for a paltry
Rs.17/- per month a member of our society and his/her
spouse, can obtain Rs.50,000/- going up to Rs.75,000/- to
cover the cost of Diagnosis and Treatment, if they were to
suffer from cancer at any time. Only one other country in
the World offers a similar Scheme (JAPAN).

CANCER CONTROL PROGRAMMES were conducted
in the four Metropolitan Cities of Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta
and Madras Supported by the GOVERNMENT OF INDIA.
